Margaret Niel

Born in 1954 in Austria, she graduated in Psychology in 1981 from the University of Salzburg, learned the art of jewellery making and became an artist in the field of contemporary jewellery.

Since 1990 she has exhibited her work at exhibitions and in galleries in Austria and abroad.

Margareta Niel makes artistic jewellery. In keeping with her original studies – psychology – she considers jewellery more than anything in terms of its personal aspect, and views it as an emotional talisman rather than something of material value.

This is why she also likes teaching. Her courses, both short and long, are aimed at people interested in gaining experience in this field. As the participants construct an item of jewellery as a personal symbolic object, they discover and develop their own manual dexterity and creativity.

This dual form of training defines Margareta Niel’s personality.

Since 1990 she has been regularly involved in courses in Vienna, Salzburg, Tyrol and Alto Adige, working with both adults and children.

From 1989 to 2003 she was regularly involved in the project “Matadora – vocational training for girls in technical, artisanal and ecological professions” in Vienna, from 1993 to 1996 in the project “Radita – for immigrant girls” in Vienna, in 1997 “Meet – promoting girls in technical professions” in Salzburg, and in 2001 in the “Fokus” project in Vienna.

From 2004 to 2008 she worked for the organisation “Sunwork – Alternative training for women and girls”, in the “Matadita” project in Vienna, and the “Elektra” and “Fit” projects in St. Pölten.

She also held short “Jewellery making” courses for adults, including for St.Virgil, Salzburg, and in 2006 and 2007 for “Akzente - Theater der Jugend” in state schools in Salzburg.

From 1997 to 1998 she held courses for the Rainbow organisation in Brunico in Alto Adige, financed by the European Community, to help women find jobs “making jewellery”.

In 1995 and 1998 she was assistant to Giampaolo Babetto in his jewellery making class held at the international summer Academy at Salzburg.

In 1999, 2000 and 2001 she held summer courses for young people in Valle Aurina in the province of Bolzano in Alto Adige.

In 2000 she was invited as visiting artist to hold a course at the Tainan National College of the Arts in Taiwan, China.

Since 2005 she has held courses for Caritas Linz in Austria for girls with physical and psychosocial problems.
